Praying to know if it’s true or not

Towards the end of the Book of Mormon (in Moroni), it suggests that you pray about its truthfulness. I have had some rather interesting conversations where people not of our faith state most emphatically that you shouldn’t pray about such a thing. I find it odd that a person of faith would tell anyone not to ask God if they believe He can’t mislead you. It’s been explained to me that your heart can’t be trusted. But can’t the Spirit be trusted? Why pray about anything if it’s so unreliable? I believe in prayer and that Heavenly Father will answer us. Of course, I would never pray to know if a blue pen is actually red, but I think asking if God gave us more scripture is a perfectly valid question. You have nothing to lose by praying about the Book of Mormon.
