Is the Ivory-Billed Extinct or Endangered? This birdwatching controversy was fueled by new sightings of this rare endangered bird in 2004 deep in the swamps in Arkansas. Bird-watchers and scientists still debate the status TODAY, though for many years people thought this rare bird was extinct. The last sighting by birdwatchers was in 1944 in Louisiana. However, even when it was at its peak population there were not very many of them. These are BIG birds and they need about ten square miles to support a nesting pair with food for their young. The debate continues even today.
