Start With Puppy Training

We all envision a well behaved dog when we first decide to bring one home. Follow these tips for puppy training, and you’ll get your wish.

Start early. Decide what behaviors you want and don’t want before you bring puppy home and encourage and discourage those behaviors from the beginning. Don’t be caught up in the excitement of a new puppy and teach him behaviors that will not be acceptable later.

Introduce your dog to friends. Teach your dog how to behave around strange people and dogs by introducing him to family, friends and their pets. Take him for walks in parks and in your neighborhood.

Use several forms of reward. Use praise and affection as your main forms of reward. You can also give a new toy as a form of positive reinforcement. Feed your dog by hand to prevent aggression over food.

Be consistent. If you’re having trouble, don’t give up. Set rules and enforce them no matter how you feel at the moment. If you don’t enforce the rules, your dog won’t know what they are.
