It used to be that when production fell, usually no one knew about it until the end of the month when production counts were tallied, and then the end of the next month when the reports were put together for the boardroom.  Now, with mes software, the machines have small sensors installed on them.  These sensors read the productivity as it flows across the machines.  When the productivity fluctuates even in the slightest, the software not only reports the fluctuation but can make minor adjustments to the settings of the machine.  If it turns out that productivity continues to fall, it is known there is a problem immediately so that the problem can be dealt with accordingly.
